Phase II Match Results Now Available

Results for Phase II of the Match are now available to participating applicants, programs, and APPIC Doctoral Program Associates in the NMS Match System. Match result notification emails have been sent to all participants. If you have not received your Phase II Match result email, log in to the NMS Match System and access your Match result online.

Internship Training Directors must send letters of confirmation of the Phase II Match result to matched applicants and their academic Directors of Clinical Training, in accordance with APPIC Match Policies (see policy #9).

No information on unfilled positions or unmatched applicants is provided in the NMS Match System. However, APPIC will operate a Post-Match Vacancy Service (PMVS) to assist eligible unmatched applicants in finding internship positions that remain available. Internship sites that have available positions may now notify APPIC if they want their positions listed in the PMVS. No action to fill positions remaining available after Phase II is to be taken before the PMVS opens for applicants at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on March 21, 2024.

Tips for Using NMS Interview in Phase II

Internship sites can use NMS Interview to schedule interviews in Phase II, whether or not they used the module in Phase I. Here are some helpful tips for making the most of NMS Interview in Phase II.

For Internship Sites

1. Set up Interview Type(s) for Phase II interviews
It is advantageous to create new Interview Type(s) specifically for Phase II. This is necessary for sites that plan to re-interview a candidate and will also make it easier for sites to import the appropriate candidates into your Phase II Rank Order List(s).

2. Create events for Phase II interviews
You need to create interview events with the dates and times the site will conduct its Phase II interviews. When creating new events, consider adding a PDF instruction document and/or video conference link so candidates know how to proceed.

3. Assign new Group(s) to Phase II candidates
If the site used NMS Interview in Phase I, we strongly recommend assigning new Group Name(s) to your Phase II candidates (e.g., "Phase2", "Phase2-Track 1", "Phase2-Track 2", etc.). Adding new group names will differentiate your Phase II candidates from your Phase I candidates and allows for easier filtering and management of your Candidate List.

4. Send an invitation to each eligible candidate
You should let candidates know in advance when you intend to send out interview invitations, if possible. Applicants greatly appreciate knowing the date and approximate time when interview invitations will be sent and believe that advanced notice makes scheduling more fair and equitable. Candidates can only schedule events that exist at the time their invitation is sent, so if you would like to interview a candidate who previously interviewed with the program, be sure to send them a new invitation.

For Applicants

1. Confirm Your Interview Details Online
Log into the NMS Match System before an interview(s) to view event details. The most up-to-date information on your scheduled events, including links (e.g., Zoom, Teams, etc.), location, and instructions, is always available in the NMS Match System.

2. Filter Your Schedule
The Interview Calendar has a Filter button that allows applicants to control which events are displayed. Applicants can streamline their calendar by selecting the option to view only scheduled interviews. This way, you can focus solely on upcoming scheduled events without any unnecessary distractions.

NMS Match System Open for Phase II Updates

Applicants and programs that are eligible to participate in Phase II of the Match can access the NMS Match System to update their status and profile information for Phase II. NMS Interview is also available to applicants and programs in Phase II. Programs participating in Phase II can view and download applications from the AAPI system beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on February 23, 2024.

All positions that remained unfilled in Phase I of the Match must be offered to applicants in Phase II. Very limited exceptions are outlined in APPIC Match Policy 10b. Additional positions that become available after Phase I of the Match may also be offered in Phase II of the Match.

Programs are not able to change the number of positions offered by a program in Phase II using the NMS Match System. Requests to add or remove positions in Phase II must be submitted by the Training Director to NMS in writing. Instructions for submitting a request to change the number of positions offered are available on the Match website. Requests received by NMS will be directed to APPIC for approval.

Ranking Strategy and Best Practices

We want to remind you of several best practices that you should use when submitting a Rank Order List for the Match:

Rank All Acceptable Choices
You may rank as many choices as you wish. By submitting a longer list of choices, you may reduce the likelihood of being left without a match. Adding more choices to your list does not jeopardize the chance of matching with your most preferred choices.

Rank Your Choices According To Your True Preference
Don't consider how highly an applicants or program might rank you when ordering the choices on your Rank Order List. Using any strategy other than ranking according to your true preference may lead to a worse result for you.

Do Not Rank Any Choice That Is Unacceptable Applicants can only be matched with programs that are on their Rank Order List. Programs can only be matched with applicants that are on their Rank Order List. Do not rank any applicants or that you would not want to match with under any circumstances.

Add and Manage Account Users

Training Directors can now add new (secondary) users to their accounts in the NMS Match System.

Secondary users will have restricted permissions in the NMS Match System. They have read-only access to training site and program information (e.g., participation status, positions offered, profile information, results, etc.), full access to interview information, but no access to rankings information. They will also be copied on relevant emails sent to the Training Director from the NMS Match System (e.g., confirmations, reminders, etc.).

This new feature is particularly useful for Training Directors who want to:

  • Have a coordinator or assistant create and manage the training site’s interview schedule
  • Keep other people informed of communications and the training site’s status in the Match.

Training Directors can log in to the NMS Match System and add new users from the Account section.

APPIC Recommends NMS Interview for Streamlined, Online, Interview Scheduling

The APPIC Board has adopted the use of NMS Interview, an online interview scheduling module integrated into the NMS Match System, that will be made available to all internship programs and students at no additional cost for the 2024 APPIC Match. NMS Interview provides an easy and automated way for training sites to schedule their interviews. APPIC piloted NMS Interview last year with a select group of internship programs and received extremely positive feedback from Directors of Clinical Training and students alike.

While internship programs are not required to use this system, the APPIC Board strongly recommends its use (including by programs that have used another scheduling system in the past) as it is integrated into the NMS Match System and provides efficiencies for both programs and students. The benefits to students (e.g., the ability to view and manage their full interview schedule on one platform) increase as more programs use a single system for interview scheduling.

Training sites and applicants that participated in the Pilot found that NMS Interview saved them hours compared to their typical interview scheduling process. Training sites also found importing applicants from NMS Interview to their Rank Order List was easy and reduced the time they spent entering rankings.

Information and instructions for using NMS Interview are available for applicants and internships.
