Best Practices

Ranking Strategy and Best Practices

Each program offers one or more tracks in the Match. A track refers to a type of position or stream of training at a program (e.g., positions with different financial support, or positions offered at different locations, may be offered as separate tracks). Applicants must rank, and are matched to, a specific track offered by a program. Similarly, programs submit a Rank Order List for each track they are offering and are matched to applicants listed on the Rank Order list for the track.

We want to remind you of several best practices that you should use when submitting a Rank Order List for the Match:

Rank All Acceptable Choices
Participants may rank as many choices as they wish. Submitting a longer Rank Order List will not jeopardize your chances of matching with your most preferred choice but may increase the likelihood of getting a match.

Rank Your Choices According To Your True Preference
Don't consider how highly an applicant or program might rank you when ordering the choices on your Rank Order List. Using any strategy other than ranking according to your true preference may lead to a worse result for you.

Do Not Rank Any Choice That Is Unacceptable
Applicants can only be matched with tracks that are on their Rank Order List. Tracks can only be matched with applicants that are on their Rank Order List. Do not rank any applicant or track that you would not want to match with under any circumstances.

Feature

Add and Manage Account Users

Program Directors can add secondary users to their accounts in the NMS Match System.

Secondary users can view, manage, and change all program and track information. They will also be copied on emails sent to you from the NMS Match System (e.g., confirmations, reminders, etc.).

This new feature is particularly useful for Program Directors who want to:

  • Have a coordinator or assistant enter rankings and manage Match information
  • Provide temporary access to an individual to manage the program during an absence (e.g., vacation, maternity leave, etc.)
  • Keep other people informed of communications and the training site’s status in the Match.

Program Directors can log in to the NMS Match System and add new users from the Account section.
