Withdraw From the Match

The 2025 ASHP Match

Things to Know

If you will not be submitting any rankings of programs for any reason, you must withdraw from the Match.

Applicants who withdraw from either Phase of the Match will not be matched to a position in that Phase. However, withdrawn applicants are permitted to seek positions after each Phase of the Match as described below.

  • Applicants who withdraw from Phase I of the Match will be permitted to participate in Phase II. They will be able to access information on programs with positions available in Phase II, apply to those programs, and submit a Rank Order List for Phase II of the Match.
  • Applicants who withdraw from Phase II of the Match will be permitted to participate in the Post-Match Process after the results of Phase II of the Match are released.

If you withdraw from either Phase of the Match, but subsequently decide that you want to submit a Rank Order List for that Phase of the Match, you can Reinstate yourself in the Match using the NMS Match System before the Rank Order List deadline for that Phase of the Match.

The NMS Match System will be accessible to withdraw or reinstate yourself until the Rank Order List deadline for Phase I. After the Phase I Rank Order List deadline, you cannot withdraw or reinstate until the system opens again for Phase II of the Match.

If you did not match to a position in Phase I, you will be able to withdraw or reinstate from the time the system opens for Phase II of the Match until the Rank Order List deadline for Phase II.

Withdrawing from Phase I

Every applicant who registers for the Match must either submit a Rank Order List of programs for Phase I of the Match or withdraw from Phase I of the Match by the Rank Order List deadline for Phase I (March 7, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

If you do not intend to submit a Rank Order List for Phase I of the Match, you must withdraw from Phase I. As part of the withdrawal process, you will be asked to select a reason for withdrawing from a pre-defined list of choices. The reason you select will indicate if you are withdrawing from Phase I only (and you plan to participate in Phase II), or if you want to withdraw from both Phase I and Phase II of the Match. The option you select is important:

  • If you withdraw from Phase I only, you will be reinstated automatically as active again for Phase II. You will be required to return to the NMS Match System for Phase II, and either submit a Rank Order List or withdraw again before the Phase II Rank Order List deadline.
  • If you withdraw from both Phase I and Phase II, your withdrawn status will carry over to start Phase II. If you decide to remain withdrawn and not participate in Phase II, there is nothing further you need to do; you do not need to return to the NMS Match System to withdraw a second time. However, you will still have the option of reinstating yourself for Phase II of the Match if desired.

If you decide to participate in Phase II, you will be able to access information on programs with positions available in Phase II, apply to those programs, and submit a Rank Order List for Phase II of the Match. You will have to reinstate yourself for Phase II before you can submit a Rank Order List for Phase II.

Withdrawing from Phase II

Every applicant who registers for the Match and does not obtain a position in Phase I of the Match is eligible to participate in Phase II. All applicants who are eligible for Phase II and who did not previously submit a withdrawal from both Phase I and Phase II must either submit a Rank Order List of programs for Phase II of the Match or withdraw from Phase II of the Match by the Rank Order List deadline (April 16, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

If you do not intend to submit a Rank Order List for Phase II of the Match, you must withdraw from Phase II before the Phase II Rank Order List deadline.

If you withdrew from both Phase I and Phase II of the Match before the Phase I Rank Order List deadline, there is nothing further you need to do; your withdrawal will be carried over automatically to Phase II, and you do not need to withdraw again from Phase II.

Applicants who withdraw from Phase II of the Match, or from both Phase I and Phase II, will be permitted to participate in the Post-Match Process after the results of Phase II of the Match are released.

Implications of Withdrawing

If you withdraw from a Phase of the Match, you will not be matched to a position in that Phase. Any rankings of programs you may have submitted for that Phase will not be used in the Match. You will also not receive further communications about participating in that Phase of the Match from NMS.

While you are withdrawn, your withdrawn status will be visible to programs. In particular, if you withdraw from both Phase I and Phase II before the Phase I deadline, you will appear as withdrawn in Phase II until you reinstate yourself for Phase II.

Withdrawing from the Match does not affect your eligibility to participate in the Match in future years.

If you submit a Rank Order List and do not withdraw by the Rank Order List deadline, your rankings will be included in that Phase of the Match. If you are matched with a program, you must accept the position with which you are matched as described in the Applicant Agreement and the ASHP Match Rules. Violations of the policies of the Match will be reported to ASHP.
