Withdrawing From The Match

To withdraw or reinstate yourself, login to update your profile.

Applicants are encouraged to review the information provided below pertaining to withdrawing from or reinstating yourself in the Match.

If you accept a position at a program that is not participating in the Match, or if you will not be submitting any rankings of programs for any other reason, you must withdraw yourself as described for each Phase of the Match below. The procedure to withdraw yourself, or to reinstate yourself if you change your mind, is described at the bottom of this page.

NOTE: Applicants who withdraw from either Phase of the Match will not be matched to a position in that Phase. However, withdrawn applicants are permitted to seek positions after each Phase the Match, as described below. The options and procedures for each Phase of the Match are described below.

Withdrawing from Phase I of the Match

Every applicant who registers for the Match must either submit a Rank Order List of programs for Phase I of the Match or withdraw from Phase I of the Match by the Rank Order List deadline for Phase I (February 8, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

As part of the withdrawal process, you will be asked to indicate if you want to withdraw from Phase I only (because you plan to participate in Phase II), or if you want to withdraw from both Phase I and Phase II of the Match. The option you select is important:

Withdrawing from Phase II of the Match

Every applicant who registers for the Match and does not obtain a position in Phase I of the Match is eligible to participate in Phase II - this includes applicants who are unmatched in Phase I, as well as applicants who withdraw from Phase I only or from both Phase I and Phase II as described above. These applicants will be permitted to access information on positions that remain available after Phase I, apply to programs that have positions available for Phase II, and submit a Rank Order List for Phase II of the Match.

If you withdraw from both Phase I and Phase II of the Match prior to the Phase I Rank Order List deadline, and you do not want to participate in Phase II, then there is nothing further you need to do; you do not need to withdraw again from Phase II. However all applicants who are eligible for Phase II and who did not previously submit a withdrawal from both Phase I and Phase II must either submit a Rank Order List of programs or withdraw from Phase II of the Match by the Rank Order List deadline for Phase II (March 19, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

Applicants who withdraw from Phase II of the Match, or from both Phase I and Phase II, will be permitted to participate in the Post-Match Vacancy Service operated by APPIC after the results of Phase II of the Match are released.

Procedure for Withdrawing or Reinstating Yourself

You withdraw or reinstate yourself using the online system provided on this web site. Select the button at the top of this page to login to the online system, then enter your 5-digit applicant Code Number and password/PIN. The page that is displayed after you login will show your current status in the Match (active or withdrawn). Select the appropriate link to change your status, then follow the instructions provided on the screen to complete the process. As part of the withdrawal process for Phase I, you will be asked to indicate whether you want to withdraw from Phase I only, or from both Phase I and Phase II, as described above.

The online system will be accessible to withdraw or reinstate yourself at any time until the Rank Order List deadline for Phase I of the Match (February 8, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time). Following that deadline, no withdrawals or reinstates can be submitted through the online system until the system opens again for Phase II of the Match starting on March 1, 2012. If you did not match to a position in Phase I, you will then be able to withdraw or reinstate yourself for Phase II of the Match until the Rank Order List deadline for Phase II (March 19, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time).

Note: If you withdraw from a Phase of the Match, any rankings of programs you may have submitted for that Phase will not be used in the matching process.

If you submit and certify any rankings of participating programs and you do not withdraw by the Rank Order List deadline, your rankings will be included in that Phase of the Match. If you are matched with a program, you must accept the position with which you are matched, as described in the Applicant Agreement and in the APPIC Match Policies. Violations of the policies of the Match will be reported to the APPIC Standards and Review Committee. The APPIC Board may decide to impose penalties on those who violate the policies.
